Route 837 East Carson Street Safety Improvement Project Preparatory Work Underway in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is announcing preparatory work on the East Carson Street (Route 837) Safety Improvement Project in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County is underway.

Crews are conducting preparatory work including survey control and inlet and utility markings along East Carson Street in various locations between the Smithfield Street Bridge and 33rd Street. During these preconstruction activities, traffic will not be impacted. Construction work on the project is anticipated to begin in early April.

Additional details on traffic restrictions will be provided prior to the start of physical work. PennDOT has received input from the City of Pittsburgh, South Side Community Council and local businesses prior to the construction process.

The $16.31 million project includes milling and resurfacing, signage and signal upgrades, concrete pavement patching, drainage, guide rail, ADA ramps, curb and sidewalk, pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction along the 2.5 mile stretch of East Carson Street. Additionally, pedestrian enhancement accommodations (including bump-outs, high visibility crosswalks, pedestrian countdown signals) will be incorporated.

When physical work begins, traffic impacts will include daylight off-peak, overnight, and weekend lane restrictions. The overall project will conclude in the Spring 2022. Golden Triangle Construction is the prime contractor.
